456 - HISTORY OF COSHOCTON COUNTY
Enos and Samuel Dean and John Norman were the earliest settlers in the western part of the township. They had been here sometime before the year 1816. Mr. Norman's father had located on the Tuscarawas river, and John moved up to the head of White Eyes creek very early. Enos Dean first pitched his cabin down by the creek, but not succeeding as he thought he should he built another cabin on a hill situated on F. W. Powell's upper farm west of the creek, with the expectation of doing better. This place, from this circumstance, was dubbed "Mount Hope," a name which clung to it for many years.

1. Born in Virginia in 1785, appropriate time line given marriage of
Benjamin Deen and Lucretia between 1781 to 1784.
2. Moved to Ohio Territory, lived within 10 miles of Enos Deen in
1820.
3. Named eldest son Benjamin.
4. Benjamin named his eldest son Enos, not a common name.
5. Benjamin named other children Nancy, Martha and George W., all
common names in our Deen lines.
6. Benjamin migrated to Iowa in the early 1860s.

Two sons and four daughters in the household

Enos, James, John and Samuel listed among the early settlers of Coshocton County

Samuel has two birthdates - 1778 and 1785. Also two wedding dates to Nancy - 1803 and 1814. This is according to family files, so research into county records is required. The earlier dat corresponds to the birth of their children.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Are there other Samuel Deens? We have additional birth dates - 1798 and 1806 and two marriages that appear to overlap.

"Alyce,
I don't have Benjamin's parents. All I have for Benjamin Deen is that he was born in PA and married Mary Ann Andrews. I have their children listed as Perry Newton, George W, Martha I, Nancy A, Louisa A, Thomas, Enos, and Hazel. I'm descended from Perry Newton Deen and Alberta Wingate through their son Oliver Jasper Martin Deen and his wife Susie Catherine Bryant. Their other children are Murl Cleotis, Mary, and Thomas Lafayette. Perry was also married to Sarah Catherine Rathbone and had Laura Evelyn, Mae, and Anna Ruby. Perry probably came to Oregon since my line ended up in Oregon and Idaho. Here's the email of another Deen descendant, Don Deen. He's the grandson of Perry and Alberta through their son Thomas. Frank Garrett, is the grandson of Perry and Sarah through their daughter Laura. Frank said Perry may have been married four times.

"I only have 4 children by Perry when married to Alice Winget.
Finally glad to connect with some one from this family. I descend from brother
Hazel who went to Oregon after Missouri and Arkansas. Though Perry went to
Oregon too. There is one there too but I had ruled him out because of a different
wife and children will have to go back and look at info. Do you know where
Benjamin died. Did you have Samuel as Benjamin’s father? Nancy as the
mother?
Alyce"

living with an Aaron Archer, his wife Susanna Archer, born in Ohio, Age 29.  This must have been
Aaron’s second wife, because he had a daughter age 19.   Was Susanna a granddughter of Samuel and Nancy? .There were 6 children under the age of 10.

Only reason I'm bringing this up, in case sometime you start working on Samuel, he might have a daughter named Susanna.

Samuel was listed as 74 M, b. Virginia and listed as a Pauper.

“Do you have any more information on Samuel Dean that you mentioned in your post? I believe your Benjamin and Sophronia ended up in Johnson County, Iowa, same as my Samuel. Benjamin was alive in the 1860 census, then just Sohphronia was listed in the 1870 Johnson County Census. I am wondering if it is the same line. I have a strong feeling my Samuel is related to these Deans, but have not found anybody researching the same line as mine. I can't make a connection! My Samuel Dean was born August 20, 1820 in Ohio, lived for about 20 years in Johnson County, Iowa. I believe he moved there a short time before 1860, and then moved to Plymouth County, Iowa shortly before 1880. Samuel Dean is my ggg-grandfather, and I cannot locate any of his family, even though there are several Dean's living in Johnson County Iowa at the same time as him, I cannot prove a connection. Any assistance you could give me would be appreciated!

The 1850 Indiana Adams County Washington Twp. census has them all here together at the same place and time. On Ancestry their names was indexed as "DEAM". Catherine, Jonathon, and Samuel #2 on this list are mine as there is documentation of this. Benjamin and Samuel #1 are on the page directly before my Samuel. Samuel #1 is living with Nancy A. Dean. If you look at the page Samuel #1 and Benjamin are on, you will notice they are 2 doors away from a Joel Roe. Joel Roe was Catherine Dean's brother.
