Notes for William Bourne
William Bourne was born about 1527 at Bobbingworth, Essex, England. He was the son of John Bourne and Margaret Unknown. William Bourne married Margaret Ryse, daughter of Richard Ryse, about 1550 at Essex, England. William "the elder" was buried at St Germain, Bobbingworth 30 May 1581 beneath the chancel window.[1]

William's father, John Bourne, was born about 1500 at Bobbingworth and married Margaret. In the latter part of the fifteenth century John's father, John Bourne or Bowrne was living in the county of Essex with his wife Elizabeth. John and Margaret had sons, William Bourne and David Bourne. William Bourne, the first son, married Margaret Ryse and was the father by her of, among others, William Bourne, Robert Bourne and Richard Bourne. Robert Bourne, second son of William and Margaret, married Katherine Medley.[2] and was the father by her of William, Robert, Edward, and several daughters.[3]

Bobbingworth Estate

The following is extracted from British History Online, Bobbingworth: Manors.[4]

"The manor of BILSDENS derived its name from the family of Billesdon. In 1496 Joan, widow of Sir Robert Billesdon and daughter and heir of John Williams, died in possession of a messuage, 280 acres of land and 20 acres of meadow in Bobbingworth and other parishes. This estate, which was then called 'Monkis alias Bobynford', was worth 100s. and was held of one Brent. Joan's heir was her son Thomas Billesdon."
"After Joan's death her Bobbingworth estate may have passed, with her Marshalls estate in North Weald , to Sir William Fitzwilliam. In 1581 William Bourne died in possession of the Bobbingworth estate which he apparently purchased from Richard, 1st Baron Rich, in 1566. William bequeathed to his wife Margaret 'household stuff, corn and cattle at Gippes alias Billesdons'. In his will he also mentioned his house there."

Research Notes

The William Bourne of this profile was not Canon of St. Paul's Cathedral and Bishop of Bath. That was Gilbert Bourne, son of Philip Bourne of Worcestershire and brother of Sir John Bourne, principal Secretary of State. See Athenae Oxenienses : Gilbert Bourn. p. 805. Gilbert Bourne may have been a cousin, rather than the brother, of John Bourne. See History of Parliament Online : John Bourne.
