Notes for Robert Taylor
10

Many Taylor historians believe that this Robert Taylor was the son of a Scottish or Scots/Irish immigrant and was born in 1705 in New York state, possibly in Broome or Tioga County. He later moved to Chester County, PA. In 1729 Lancaster County was formed out of Chester. Then in 1750 Cumberland was formed out of Lancaster; 1789 Mifflin County was formed from part of Cumberland and part of Northumberland; 1831 Juniata was formed from part of Mifflin.

Historian R. Gregory Taylor, believes that Robert Taylor and his wife Jean Patterson, along with James Sample and his wife Ann were among the congregants of the Derry Presbyterian Church in present-day Hershey, Derry Twp, Dauphin County, PA. . He believes they were probably married in this church, as well as his son Robert and Ann Sample Taylor, who migrated to Erie County in 1798. Unfortunately, the Derry church records burned in a file in 1894.

Robert and Jean Patterson Taylor owned 150 acres of land at Pine Ford on Swatara Creek about ten miles from Derry Township. Robert apparently owned and operated a tavern at that place and served as township tax collector during the 1750s. After his wife Jean Patterson died Robert married Mary McCandless. Six years before he died he is said to have obtained 3000 acres in the Kishacoquillas Valley for his sons and their families.
