Notes for Robert Chapman I
15

From these records it appears that the first Chapman found inKingston upon Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, was a Robert in 1405. Through the years the family remained there, and in nearby villages. They were commonly small businessmen, such as salters,"berebrewers", drapers, glovers, and merchants. One Robert Chapman, glover of nearby Beverly, had his will probated July 12, 1581. A secondRobert Chapman of Kingston-on-Hull, Herthill, had his will second RobertChapman in Jan. 1589/90 had first married Elizabeth Williamson in HolyTrinity Church, Kingstowne upon Hull.

This Robert Chapman had the following children baptized at HolyTrinity Church, Kingstown upon Hull: Elizabeth, 22 Oct. 1591; Ann. 4 May1594; Judith, 6 June 1596; and Marie, 5 Feb. 1599/60. On 31 Aug. 1610Elizabeth, the wife of this Robert Chapman, merchant, was buried at HolyTrinity Parish, Robert Chapman married second, Alice, not in Kingstown upon Hull. The will Kingstown upon Hull, and their first, and only recorded, child was Robert Jr., baptized 1 Jan. 1616/7 at Holy TrinityParish, Kingstown upon Hull. The will of the last Robert's father,Robert Chapman, Sr., was settled on 22 Oct.1633 with Alice, his widow, noted as now deceased, and administration of his goods being handed on toJohn Robinson of Beverly.

It seems possible that this Robert Sr.'s second wife, the mother ofRobert Jr. , was an Alice Robinson of Beverly. And it is also possible that Robert, Jr.'s grandfather was the Robert Chapman, glover, of Beverly, whose will was probated July 12, 1581. The author visited Beverly , in an attempt to examine theParish records of the Catherine there. But it was impossible to obtain permission to do so. In spite of Kingstown's being a port on the RiverHull, in former times Beverly was a larger and much more important place. Beverly was one of the few towns in Yorkshire to have built init not only a Parish Church, but a Cathedral.

So the Chapman Family Genealogy statements are borne out by the records. The immigrant, Robert Chapman, actually a Jr. & only son, was born in 1616 in Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire, and so would have been 19years old when he came to Conn. in 1635. His father's death two years before that apparently left him with the desire to adventure in the new world, instead of remaining Hull. Since he had four older half-sisters by his father's first marriage, it is perfectly possible that three of them later came to New England. It is known that one of them married William Bushnell, son of Francis, Sr. of Guilford, Conn.
