Robert Chapman in The Chapman Family Genealogy is said to have comefrom Hull in England, aged about 18, and he arrived in Boston in 1635. From there he sailed with Lyon Gardiner on Nov. 3 for Say-Brook, Conn.,as on of a company of men sent to settle land, and build a fort, near the mouth of the Conn. River, under patent of Lords Say & Sele, and Brook.Afterwards, three sisters came over too. He later owned large areas of land, and he was elected from Say-Brook 52 times to be a member of the State Legislature. Upon his death he left each of three sons 1500 acres of land in Hebron. He also owned land in East Haddam as well as Say-Brook.

From these records it appears that the first Chapman found in Kingston upon Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, was a Robert in 1405. Through the years the family remained there, and in nearby villages. They were commonly small businessmen, such as salters,"berebrewers", drapers, glovers, and merchants. One Robert Chapman, glover of nearby Beverly, had his will probated July 12, 1581. A second Robert Chapman of Kingston-on-Hull, Herthill, had his will second Robert Chapman in Jan. 1589/90 had first married Elizabeth Williamson in Holy Trinity Church, Kingstowne upon Hull.


Robert Chapman, one of the first settlers of Saybrook, CT, in 1635-36, or in the succeeding spring, according to family tradition was born in 1616, and came from Hull, England, to Boston in 1635. He was for many years commissioner for Saybrook, CT. and was elected as their deputy to the General Court forty-three times, and assistant nine times. He settled on a tract of land some two miles west of Saybrook. He was a man of exemplary piety. His parents were Pruitans. He married, in 1642, Ann Bliss. He died in 1687, and his wife in 1685. Their children were: John, Robert, Hannah, Nathaniel, Mary and Sarah

Served in the Pequot War under Lieutenant Lion Gardiner, and King Philip's War.
Appointed Captain by the General Court at Hartford, October 14.1675. Deputy to the General Court from SayBrook forty-three times, and assistant nine times, serving continuously from 1654 to 1684, Colony of Connecticut.
