Notes for George Spear
13

1. GEORGE1 SPEAR1 was born Abt. 1613 in Sheffield or Yarmouth England2,3,4,5, and died March 21, 1718/19 ?, Braintree, Norfolk Co., Massachusetts6. He married MARY HEATH7 Abt. 1643 8, daughter of WILLIAM HEATH and MARY PERRY. He married MARY NEWCOMB8 April 27, 1675 in Braintree, Norfolk Co., Massachusetts - or 1676?8, daughter of FRANCIS NEWCOMB and RACHEL BRACKETT. He married ELIZABETH GENT9 Abt. 1680 in Sheepscot, , Maine10. He had over 200 descendants fighting in the Revolutionary War, over 100 bearing his name with 16 of them officers. An equal number of descendants from the Spear daughters enlisted from Massachusetts alone, and fought to free a nation.

1642: To Dorchester, Mass.

Abt 1644; leased land of Thomas Shepard of Boston and settled on it. Tradition states it was the Mount Wollaston farm previous to its being occupied by John Quincy. The territory was then known as Wollaston Heights. This was in the then town of Braintree, Mass., which included what is now Braintree, Randolph, Quincy and Holbrook. George has been placed by genealogists in what is now Braintree, but if so it is also reasonably sure that he located on the Quincy farm, and that he founded Spear Town, now Hough's Neck both of which are in Quincy. There is no record of his having owned real estate in Hough's Neck, but his descendants owned most of it. Quincy, north precinct of Braintree, was set off first and was settled on its northern shores in 1625.

April 1644; Member of Braintree church when daughter Mary was baptized at Roxbury "by communion? of Churches".

May 29, 1644; At Braintree, made freeman of the colony. Became a tenant farmer to William Coddington and purchased by Captain Tyng.

May 28, 1652; Will written. Leaves to daughter Mary Spear, 10#.

Mar. 1, 1653, deposed "I am about 33 years of age,"

March 06, 1659/60, mentioned in inventory of estate of Mahalaleel Munnings11

May 1662; Of Bogastow or Natick, now Sherborn?, when he petitioned with others to have a new town there.

1672; Sold land in Medfield and Natick, MA. May not have ever removed to either.

1676; purchased an Indian boy at Boston, and Mar. 11, 1678, the Court paid for freeing the boy.

About 1678; At Braintree took oath of allegiance with sons Ebenezer and Samuel.

1680; Involved in court case at Braintree with Peter Bracket.

May 21, 1688; petitioned for the lands at Sheepscot formerly belonging to the first husband of his current wife. George was living in New Dartmouth , Maine, as evidenced by a petition made by him "May ye 21th. 1688". Tradition that he was killed by the Indians is warranted by the Indian wars and raids in the locality at that date as there is no further record of him. His youngest son's home in an adjoining town was a wooden fortress.

A large amount of material was gathered on this family in the 1880s - 1890s by William Gardner Spear of Quincy. Records at the Quincy Historical Society and NEHGS. Mrs. Grace P. Bonsall of Quincy, a descendant, continued and enlarged the data.
