Born 16 Oct 1831 in PA, according to the 1870 Fed Census of Monroe, Shelby County, Iowa. He signed his name as Jno S. Smith, but was also known as John S. Smith. Nothing known about parents. He married Elvina Dean on 16 August 1858. They had Florence, Benjamin Frank, Cornelia A., Sophronia R, Eldora E., George, Bertha Ellen and Sarah E.. Jno S. Smith was in the Civil War, and according to his tombstone was in the CO. C. 3rd Infantry. He died 19 January 1890 from respiratory illness at home. He is buried in the Monroe United Methodist Cemetery in Shelby County, Iowa.
