Notes for Alexander Millikan
Alexander Millikan, the 5th son of William and Eleanor Millikan, was born in 1788 in N.C. when at the age of 7, his family emigrated to Granger Co., TN. Alexander married Elizabeth Russell, of TN, at the age of 21, and about the same time, he came in possession of a farm which he proceeded to clear and improve. A subsequent survey resulted in finding the title of this land belonged to another and all was lost. He settled another claim but that was taken away in the same way, so another claim was made for a third time. The third claim was for 300 acres where he farmed and raised a family of 12 children, 8 girls and 4 boys.
Alexander moved to IN, in Dec. 1838, following three of his children there. On his way just west of Cincinnati, his 4-horse team got frightened and ran away, coming in contact with a fence and tearing lose a stake which struck the driver, Martin Stubblefield, on the head, killing him instantly. In the wagon was 4 of his children, all escaped unhurt, after the team had run for a mile. Upon arriving in IN, he settled on a farm which he had bought previously, about 1 and 1/2 miles east of Hillsboro, on Little Blue River. They settled in the woods again, in a small log house, of which his son, John R., had prepared for them. Here he lived and improved the land. His family grown and his wife very sickly, his children began to marry and go on their own. His wife, Elizabeth, died in May of 1855. After her death, he moved to a farm on Flatrock in Liberty Twp., Henry Co., IN which eventually was owned and occupied by his son, David, and here Alexander on Aug. 18, 1880 died being almost 93 years old. Alexander and Elizabeth had joined the Baptist Church and had remained faithful and consistent members of that faith.
