Notes for Elizabeth Dexter
disputed origins

Leslie Mahler article of JAN. 2003 states:

"Thomas has been claimed as the father of Elizabeth, wife of George Carr, based on a deposition of 27 June 1682 wherein James Oliver named George as his brother-in-law. This seems unlikely, as there was already another daughter named Elizabeth in the Oliver family, and especially since Thomas mentioned no such daughter in his will. The most likely solution is that George Carr and James Oliver were married to daughters of Thomas Dexter."

Thomas Putnam, his wife Ann and his daughter Ann all accused others of Witchcraft during the Salem Witch Trials.

Many highly derivative and unreliable online sources claim that she was Elizabeth Oliver and was born possibly 12 April 1624, possibly in Boston, Massachusetts or in Bristol, Gloucester, England.

In a deposition she made in 1682, she refers to "my Brother and Sister Oliver" from which some researchers have concluded that she was sister to James Oliver and therefore daughter of his father Thomas Oliver. But Anderson writes: "There does not seem to be any place for Elizabeth in the family of Thomas Oliver [GMB 2:1354-57], but she could well be a daughter of Thomas Dexter, whose daughter Mary married first John Friend and then James Oliver."

A subsequent article published in 2003 found the baptism and marriage records of Elizabeth Oliver, daughter of Thomas Oliver. She married Thomas Woolful in 1625 and remained in England.

All combined, this means that Elizabeth who married George Carr was NOT the daughter of Thomas Oliver and Anne Squire. They have been detached as her parents.

She is most likely the daughter of Thomas Dexter and Mary Harper Fuller, and baptized 31 August 1623 in Great Bowden, Leicestershire, England.

Elizabeth Carr is considered by Anderson a likely daughter, in fact because of that will data mixup: Carr & Oliver were brothers in law.
