Edward Wilcox/Willcox · 6 May 2014 · Edward Willcox/Wilcox was born before 7 Feb 1603/1604 in South Elkington,Lincolnshire, England of parents Daniel Willcox and Isabel/Esabel. He married Susan/Susannah Tompson, daughter of Amos Tompson and Cayrnthaphuck,12 May 1631 in Orby, Lincolnshire , England

Edward Wilcox of Portsmouth , Rhode Island was born about 1605 , died after May 1638. he occurs in the list of the inhabitants of Portsmouth on May 20,1638, having been admitted on 2 April 1638. He had land on the east side of Portsmouth, which passed to his son Daniel. This land was situated in the northern part of Portsmouth and was bounded north on Thomas Spicer, east on the Sakonnet River ,south on Thomas Lawton and west on the main road. This land lies on the east side of the East Main Road not far south of the turn which leads to the Stone Bridge leading from Portsmouth to Tiverton Married about 1630-33 . Edward was an inhabitant of Aquidneck on May 20,1638 and thereafter disappeared from the Rhode Island records.

New England Families Genealogical and Memorial: Volume IV The first settler of this name in Rhode Island was Edward Wilcox, one of the first inhabitants of the island Aquidneck , in 1638, and joined in forming the compact of government May 28 of that year. He also had lands in Manhattan, and about the time of his appearance in Aquidneck he had a trading house at Narragansett, in company with Roger Williams. Some time after they took into their business Richard Smith, formerly from Gloucestershire, England, later of Taunton, Massachusetts.Edward Wilcox died probably at Narragansett before 1648, and in 1653 the above mentioned Smith appears to have acted as guardian for eight children supposed to have been those of Edward Wilcox. He was owner of the ship "Abigail", and was actively engage d in trading along the Atlantic coast. In partnership with Smith and Williams he operated at New Netherlands, and he is supposed to have owned land at Bushwick, Long Island, in 1638. He was an enterprising and aggressive trader and appears at one time in Virginia and again in Delaware in the Swedish colony. Among his children were Stephen and Daniel. There were undoubtedly others who do not appear of record.
