Henry Clarke's reference to brothers-in-law Stephen and Thomas Archer suggest the identity of Stephen Clarke's mother... Henry Archer of Epping, Essex, in his will dated 9 February 1558/9, proved 9 April 1559, named son-in-law Henry Clarke as well as daughter Ellen and her son John Clarke, from which it was assumed that Henry Clarke's wife, and the mother of son John, was this daughter Ellen. However, the 1560 baptism of Joan Clarke, daughter of Henry and Joan Clarke , would indicate that Ellen died shortly after the date of her father's will, and that her widower Henry Clarke had remarried a woman named Joan. It is likely she was the daugher Joan mentioned in Henry Archer's will. While the Church might have frowned upon marriage to a deceased wife's sister, it is significant that in his 1575 will, Henry Clarke made "brothers" Stephen and Thomas Archer the overseers of the will. This office necessarily entrusted them with the well-being of his widow Joan and his underage children, all of whom appear to have been Joan's children."
