Notes for Dane/ Deen Christopher
The Deen surname lineage is most closely genetically related to the Christopher and Barry lineages from Ireland.

Research* suggests the Deen men were descendants of the Danish** invaders of the British isles in the 9th and 10th centuries. During the period when surnames were adopted in the British isles , members of these families, knowing their heritage, may have taken either the name Dane or Christopher after the kings of the Danish kingdom*** at that time.

After the famine of 1740-41 when 20% of the Irish population died, Irish individuals and families began to emigrate to other countries, notably as indentured servants.

* The origin of the Deen genetic lineage is Norwegian I-M253 Ultra Nordic, from I-M170.

** Vikings came from Denmark, Sweden and Norway and territories of Finland, Iceland, Greenland, Faroe Islands and the Northern Isles. Their territories in England and Ireland were known as Danelaw.

***The Kalmar Union Danish/Norwegian/Swedish kings Christopher I, Christopher II, Eric Christoffersen, Christopher III, Christian I, Christian II, Christian III, Christian IV and Christian V ruled between 1448 and 1669.
