John is of record in Westerly in 1661, and was made a freeman of the town in 1668. He died in 1690 in Pawcatuck and was buried just below the village of Westerly, near the road leading to Watch Hill.

This John Lewis was a grand juror in Westerly, 1688. On Feb 6 1690, he sold to his brother Daniel 100 acres, dwelling house and orchard and 4 1/2 acres meadow which said lands were "formerly my fathers and given me as may appear, I being the rightful owner since my fathers decease". On Nov. 6, 1701, purchased of Reuben Walt, of Dartmouth, 50 acres in Westerly for 40 shillings. Was Deputy 1704, 1709 and 1710. His Will, written Apr. 14, 1732, probated April 22, 1735, names as executors his wife Ann and son Joseph.
"To wife, a third of movables. To children, 5 pounds each, viz., to son Joseph, John, William, Mary Dak, Sarah Bemis, Ann Ross, Abigail Slack, Jerusha Lewis. To negro "Will", 10 pounds and his freedom. To all children, rest of estate equity."
Inventory was 413 pounds, 11 shillings, viz. 2 young oxen, 4 cows, calf, 8 swine, 20 sheep, 11 lambs, house, mare, silver money 4 pounds, 5 shillings, etc.
The surname of Ann has never been proven, although information is advanced by some that she was the daughter of John and Ruth. Johns's Will, probated May 30, 1757, names his father as George Lanphere, and his daughters Anna Lewis Ruth Shaw, Experience Satterly, as well as Mary, Patience and Kezian Lanphere, and sons John, Daniel, Amos and Nathan. It has been pointed out, however, that there would seem to be too great a difference in age possibility here, but nothing has been found otherwise to identify the Lewis who married Anna Lewis.
