RUTH HALLETT NORDLANDER EDWARDS died June 24, 2009 in Seattle WA after ten years living with Alzheimer's disease. She was born May 7, 1940 in Cleveland to Kathryn L. and George Robert Hallett. She graduated from Heidelberg College in 1962 where she was President's Scholar. She earned a Ph.D. and D.D.S. from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland. In 1965 she married J. Eric Nordlander and George Robert Hallett. She graduated A.B. in 1962 from Heidelberg College, Tiffin Ohio, where she was President's Scholar, and Ph.D ., and D.D.S. from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland OH. In 1965 she married J. Eric Nordlander . She was a Visiting Scientist at the Czechoslovak Academy of Science in Prague 1969-70, during which she saw the Russian occupation. She practiced dentistry briefly before joining the Faculty of the School of Dentistry at Case Western Reserve University in 1980, where she taught neuroanatomy and development, continued research and raised their two children. After Eric died in 1986 she moved as Professor of Oral Biology, Neurobiology and Anatomy to The Ohio State University School of Dentistry where she taught neuroscience and continued her research in neural development, for which she received a Javits Research Award from the National Institutes of Health. In 1997 she resigned from her position at OSU, married John S. Edwards, Professor of Zoology at the University of Washington who had been her doctoral advisor, mentor and friend, and moved to Seattle. She was a pioneer as a woman in the then male-dominated dental school faculties and in her research where she made significant contributions to the field of developmental neuroscience. Besides her passionate commitment to research and teaching she was fond of the outdoors, a keen hiker and gardener, and a devoted fan of music, especially from the medieval and baroque periods. She is survived by her husband John, her son Theodore H Nordlander, daughter Elizabeth Nordlander, granddaughter Berrit Nordlander-Borowski, all of Brooklyn NY; sister Roberta Abbey of Mentor OH and brother William Hallett of Dripping Springs TX. A celebration of her life will take place in Cleveland at a later date. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Seattle Parks Foundation, 860 Terry Ave N. #231, Seattle WA 98109, for a park bench in her name, recognizing the many joyous hours she spent in Magnusson Park beside Lake Washington.
