Notes for John Gossenoll III
21

John Gosnold and married Katherine Kebell. He built Otley Hall during the reign of Henry VII - to replace Netherhall Manor at Otley, Suffolkshire. Part of the original foundation or most of Netherhall manor was left and can be seen today. It is a short distance from the newer Otley Hall which became the Gosnold family seat. At times, Otley Hall is called "Otley Manor, and also Netherhall Manor. This John is referred to in 1491 as "John Gosenoll fil of John Gosenoll de Ottley and is the holder of the sinecure office of Steward at Framsden to the north of Otley. This John owned property both in Otley and in Clopton. He lived in the Diocese Norwich. He was buried in the churchyard of St Mary's at Otley. Presumably, the present day Otley still has some of the original oak panelling, the Gosnold coat of arms and stained glass windows.

John Gosnold and Katherine Kebell had 6 children:- Robert Gosnold, Edmund or Edmond Gosnold, a twin of William, William Gosnold, a twin of Edmund , Alice Gosnold, Margaret Gosnold, and Katherine Gosnold. Subsequent generations of the Gosnolds built themselves up through a series of advantageous marriages into a noble family based in Otley Hall. Two of the most notable were that of Robert Gosnold to Ursula Naunton, , the Wingfields and the Berties . Winifred Windsor was the sister of Edward, Lord Windsor. This was the heyday of the family and lasted until the Civil War in the 17th century when the alliance with the Royalist case undid the family and eventually they sold Otley Hall. The most famed Gosnold in this period was Bartholomew, an early adventurer to the New World, landing at Cape Cod in 1602 some twenty years before the Pilgrims Bartholomew was one of the founders of the first permanent colonial settlement in Jamestown, Virginia where he died. Another famed Gosnold, who descended from Otley Hall, was Sir Henry Gosnold who emigrated to Ireland and was the progenitor of all the later generations of Gosnells as they were known in Ireland. Many of his descendants emigrated to Canada and the USA.
