Notes for Edmund Robert Gosnold
19

Robert Gosnold was called "Robert the Younger". He was the second son and heir apparent, because his older brother, John Gosnold, died earlier, but their father Robert Gosnold outlived them both by 13 years. Robert Gosnold lived at Otley, Suffolkshire. He was buried in the church yard in Otley near his wife's grave. She died before he did. Robert Gosnold was the grandfather of Bartholomew Gosnold who discovered Cape Cod, Massachusetts in 1602, and the leader of the colony at Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607, during which year he died. Robert Gosnold was also grandfather of our Sir Henry Gosnold, who went to Ireland as Attorney General of Munster for Queen Elizabeth. Bartholomew Gosnold and Sir Henry Gosnold were first cousins, their fathers having been children together in the large rooms of Otley Manor and students at Cambridge and Law School. The lordship of the Manor of Netherhall, Otley passed to Robert Gosnold III, the eldest son of Robert Gosnold II, who outlived his son and heir, and then the Manor of Netherhall, of Otley passed to his grandson Robert Gosnold V. Robert Gosnold and Mary Vesey had 13 children. Robert was Justice of the Peace for Suffolk in the reign of Elizabeth I.
