Browning Family History by Clint Joyce and Cecil Houk dated February 15, 2000

As to the American origin of the family there are two traditions. One was that they descended from John Browning, an emigrant from England t Virginia coming in the ship "Abigail" in 1621. The other was that the father of Francis Browning Sr. received a grant of land in Caroline Co. in June 1735. He was born about 1690. It was thouth that Francis Browning Sr. married Elizabeth Lloyd, but records of Essex Co. shows his wife's name was Rachel. He may have been married twice.

Ports and Children
Captain John Browning was born approximately 1588 in England. When he arrived in Virginia he would have been 33 years old, in 1621. He married Elizabeth Demaron, born about 1590, in 1614 and immediately a son was born . John sailed to America from Gravesend, England aboard the "Abigail" in 1621 with son George, but apparently left two other children in London. He landed at the "College Lands" later known as Jamestown, York County, Virginia. He finally settled in Elizabeth City, Virginia, where as a prominent citizen he served in the House of Burgesses of Elizabeth City and Mounts Bay. Captain John Browning is acknowledged as the founder of the "Southern Branch" of the Brownings. He died in Jamestown in 1662.

His known children were:
1. George b 1614 London, Middlesex, England
2. William b 1615 London, Middlesex, England
3. Joseph b 1617 London, Middlesex, England

George Browning was born in 1614 in England and came with his father aboard the Abigail to America.

William Browning was born in 1615 in London, Middlesex, England. His wife was born in 1619 in London, Middlesex, England. They married in 1645 in Jamestown, Virginia. He may have immigrated to Virginia with his father and brother George, aboard the Abigail, but travelled back to London within a year because of the hard conditions, after which he came back to America aboard the "Bona Nouva," commanded by Captain John Huddleston. The Bona Nova made three trips from the Port of London to York County Virginia, the last documented being before February 4, 1624/5. Passengers included William Browninge , who would have been 10 years old. William is my direct ancestor.

Joseph Browning was born in 1617 in England. He came to America after his father, aboard the ship "Thomas", leaving London on August 21, 1635. He settled at Jamestown and was reported to be the brother of William and George.
