Notes for Rev Roger Newton
13

Note: Roger Newton, a native of England, son of Samuel Newton,
matriculated at Kings College, Cambridge, England, on Easter 1636. He
later emigrated to New England, landing in Boston around 1638. He was
a student at Harvard College in 1640. He settled in Hartford,
Connecticut, and became a student, studied theology, of Rev. Thomas
Hooker, one of the founders of the colony of Connecticut. In 1644, he
married Mary Hooker, daughter of Rev. Thomas Hooker. Rev. Roger
became the first minister of Farmington, Connecticut, being ordained
the day the church was formed, October 13, 1652. though he had been a
preacher for some time before. He was dismissed in 1657, after five
years, and in October went to Boston to sail to England for a visit.
Unfortunately, the sailing season was particularly stormy that year.
The superstitious captain blamed the bad weather on Rev. Roger, and
would not allow him to sail with his ship. It is not known whether he
later made the voyage with another ship. On August 22, 1660, he was
installed as the second pastor of the church in Milford, Connecticut,
succeeding Rev. Peter Pruden. Rev. Roger remained in this parish
until his death, 23 years, there on June 7, 1683. He and Mary had
eight children: Samuel, Roger, Susanna, John, Ezekiel, Sarah, Mary,
and Alice.

Married Mary Hooker, daughter of Susannah. Apparently she journeyed
as an invalid. Her journey is commemorated on a marble panel on
athefront of the Capitol in Hartford.A house at Arch & Prospect
indicates Roger Newton was the first pastor in Farmington, CT 1645-
57. He then went to Milford from 1660-83 with his wife and six
children. House was on 14 acres beyond "Dreadful Bridge." Newton
educated Abraham Pierson at Newton's home. Pierson later became
the first president of Yale.
