Captain

At least two children born to this marriage

Children of Mary CAREY and Edmund LEWIS are:
i. Thomas LEWIS was born 5 Jan 1630 in Of, E. Greenwich, Kent, England, and died 26 Apr 1709 in Bristol, Bristol, Rhode Island. He married Mary DAVIS 15 Jun 1653 in Barnstable, Barnstable, Mass.. He married Hannah BAKER 11 Nov 1659 in Lynn, Essex, Massachusetts, daughter of Edward BAKER and Joan Or JANE. She was born ABT 1638 in Lynn, Suffolk, Massachusettes, and died Jan 1717 in Bristol, Bristol, Rhode Island.

ii. John LEWIS was born 1631 in , East Greenwich, , England, and died 1690 in Westerly, Washington, Rhode Island. He married Mary BUTTON ABT 1657 in Westerly, Washington, Rhode Island. She was born 1639 in Westerly, Washington, Rhode Island, and died 1705 in
Westerly, Washington, Rhode Island. He married Hannah. He married Frances PARKER.

His connection to George Lewis is not firmly established. He could also have been the son of THomas Lewes, merchant of Ipswich. His family name may have been Lewis or Lewes

Edmund Lewis, who came to this country and first settled in Watertown, is said to have come from Lynn Regis , England, but there is no record of him
or any of his family on the church registers there. Alonzo Lewis, in his history of Lynn , states that he was a brother of William Lewis, who was at Roxbury
in 1630, and was a founder of Lancaster, Mass., in 1653, who descended from a good Welsh family, with a pedigree running back centuries. Where Lewis obtained his information is not at my command. I have searched the records of this colony and visited England and Wales, used the library of the British Museum, and consulted the records of Somerset House and Fetter Lane, London, without suc-
cess. Alonzo Lewis has his pedigree upon his monument in the Western Burying Ground, Lynn, running from William, through Isaac, his son, who died childless. In point
of fact, Alonzo Lewis was descended from Isaac, son of John, of Charlestown and Maiden. If Alonzo Lewis had stated his Welsh pedigree, giving the name of the Welsh
ancestor, or the place from which he emigrated, it might have been traced.

There is no doubt but that Edmund was brought up by the sea. He had a good estate at Watertown, but it was away from the water, and he went to Lynn, where he
found an ideal place, and bought forty acres directly upon the seashore. He may have been a sailor, as in his inventory appears a " cutlas," a weapon used in battle, at close
quarters, on vessels. He may have bought his land of John Wood, as his lands are called " Wood end fields," and that end of the town was called " Wood end." In his
will he mentions John and Thomas as having some property, and is solicitous for the welfare of the five youngest children, of whom only James and Nathaniel are recorded
at Watertown, so the others were born in Lynn, and no record made. Whether he had live children younger than John, as Savage thinks, or five younger than Thomas, is
uncertain. Of James I find no certain trace. Nathaniel, with his brother Joseph, sailed away to New London, Conn., in 1666.

On April 10, 1634, Edmund Lewis, aged 33 years, his wife Mary, aged 32, son John, aged 3, and son Thomas, aged £ years, embarked in the Elizabeth, William An-
drews, master, at Ipswich, England. He settled at Watertown, Mass., and shared in the first great division of lands. His homestead was on what is now the east side of Lexington street. He was granted land July 25, 1636, lot 26, 30 acres in the 1st division ; Feb. 28, 1636-7, lot 82, 5 acres ; June 16, 1637, lot 61, 5 acres ; April 9, 1638, 6 acres. In the book of possessions he held in lands : A Homestall of 6 acres. One acre of meddowin Rockmeddow.
Thirty acres of upland being a great Divident in the 1 st Division, the 25 th Lott. Five acres of Plowland in the further Plaine and the 91 lott. Five acres of meddow in the remote meddows & the 61 lott. A farme of

hundred acres of upland. One acre of remote meddow
by estimation. He was admitted a freeman May 24, 1636,
and was elected a selectman for the year 1638. Oct. 14,
1638, he was one of a committee chosen " To lay out the
farmes as they were ordered, near the Dedham line."
Alonzo Lewis' History of
Lynn says he removed to Lynn in 1639. Bond's Geneal-
ogies of Watertown says he removed after 1642. He
buried a child there Nov. 6, 1642; Savage says 1643. He
had lived near the sea, and when he removed to Lynn he
settled in the eastern part of the town, on what is now
Lewis street. He died in January, 1650. His wife died
Sept. 7, 1658.

In his will, made the 13, llth month, 1650, he mentions
five young children. The date of birth of two of them is
not recorded, and the name of one of them is not known.
His will, on file hi Essex County Probate Records, Vol. 1,
f. 119, is as follows :

The Lewis Family of Wales and America, by Edward Simmons Lewis in 1923 states he does .  Descendants of John Gamage of Ipswich, MASS shows Thomas Lewis of Van . Archeolgia Cambrensis Journal also shows Thomas Lewis of Van and his first wife Margaret Gamage. Planatenet Ancestry: A Study in Colonial and Medieval Families shows Margaret Gamage and Thomas Lewis of Van.  History of Antiquities of Glamoranshire and his Familes shows Thomas Lewis of Van and Margaret Gamage.
From Ancestry of C.S. Lewis by Alston Jones McCaslin V & Silas Dobbs McCaslin: 'THE LEWIS FAMILY OF WALES AND AMERICA, p. 237, -"George Lewis of Lystalybont , married, third, Mary Gore, daughter of Edward Gore of Wiltshire, and had sons, Herbert, Harry, William, and John, and several daughters. Of these, William came to America in 1630, and, settling in Roxbury, Massachusetts, became known as William Lewis of Roxbury. References to Edmund of Lynn and William of Roxbury, as brothers , are made in several histories of that period, as follows:

“'William Lewis of Roxbury, brother to Edmund Lewis of Lynn, was descended from a very respectable family in Wales. His descendants enjoy great satisfaction in being able to trace their descent from a very high antiquity.”–Annals of Lynn.

'Edmund Lewis of Lynn was brother to William Lewis of Roxbury, who descended from a Welsh family with a pedigree running back centuries.”–History of Lynn, by Alonzo Lewis and James Newhall .

'Edmund Lewis of Lynn was one of the first settlers of Watertown. He removed to Lynn and died there in 1651. William Lewis, brother of Edmund, came from England in 1630 and settled in Roxbury.”–The General Register of First Settlers in New England, by John Farmer.'"

Charles Lewis states: "Distant relatives of Francis Lewis who did in fact sign the Declaration of Independence as a delegate from New York. FYI, the Lewises of Connecticut and Rhode Island are also related to the same Lewis family of Glamorganshire, Wales."

authors note-he states Edmund Lewis immigrant to RI, we know it was to MA.
Mark Wallace states: "Edward Lewis Glemorganshire, Wales married Margaret Jones. 1550 and a son, William, was babtised in 1561 at Penarth, Wales.

William 2nd came from england on the ship Lion. Landed in Boston Sept 16, 1632 Settled in Canbridge Mass. His name on settlers monument at Hartford Ct."
However there are researchers that don't agree that he came from Wales.
Edmund Lewis of Lynn Massachusetts and Some of His Descendants by George Harlan Lewis in 1908 states he came from Lynn Regis England. But at the time of his publication he hadn't located the family within the church registers.

From Early Settlers of Watertown, Massachusetts by Bond, 1855 - p. 337 and 338- "LEWIS - Embarked at Ipswich, England, Apr. 10, 1634, in the Elizabeth, William Andrews, Master, Edmund Lewis, aged 33, wife Mary, aged 32, son John, aged 3 years, son Thomas, aged 9 months. He was admitted freeman, May 24, 1636; was Selectman, 1638. Children, 1. JOHN, b. 1631 in England. 2. THOMAS, b. in England 1633. 3. JAMES, b. in Watertown, Jan. 15, 1635-6. 4. NATHANIEL, b. Aug. 25, 1639. 5. CHILD, aged 20 days, buried Nov. 6, 1642. Mary Lewis of Lynn, widow of Edmund of Watertown, lately deceased, sold, to William Page, for £10, all her parcels of land in Watertown, Nov. 26, 1652."----------------"George and Hannah Lewis, had 1. Samuel, b. June 16, 1685.  Hannah Lewis, m. Nov 13, 1702, Jacob Peirce.[16] Barrachios Lewis, of Rox, m., Dec. 4, 1734, Hannah Adams [9]."

Authors note-Could William Page be related to Benjamin Page Jr. who married Elizabeth Lewis great granddaughter of Edmund and Mary Lewis?

In Michael Lewis's book Descendants of Edmond Lewes of Lynn  The author claims that a Survey of Llystalybont of 1653 proves that Edmund Lewis of Llys Talybont, Glamorgan, Wales was alive and still living in Llys Talybont on May, 8, 1637, three years after Edmond Lewes had sailed from Ipswich, Suffolk, England to Watertown, Massachusetts.
Edmund/Edmond was born about 1596-1601 and he married Mary could her surname be Carey/Cary/Carew?

There is circumstantial evidence that the parents of Edmund Lewis are George Lewis and Catherine Mathew/Matthew of Wales.  There is circumstantial evidence that Edmund/Edmond Lewis/Lewes of Lynn, Massachusetts is the same as Edmund Lewis of Llys Talybont, Glamorgan, Wales.  There is circumstantial evidence that Edmund/Edmond Lewis/Lewes came from England.
In all circumstantial cases it takes further documentation to prove something. People who research and document all information and documents found are doing professional work in presenting all angles of the issue. It will take others, possibly future generations to find documents that can prove it one way or the other. I urge everyone to do their own research, draw their own conclusions and maybe one day further documentation will be found.  In the case of Edmund Lewis there are several people that matches in both Wales and England that could be him.

There are many baptism records found- one of a Edmund Lewys, and 2 Edmund Lewis in England in the right 1596-1602 era, could he be one of these? Additionally in Hawkedon, Suffolk, England there is found the birth of an Edmond Lewis in 1600, could this be him?  In Stoke-by-Nayland, Suffolk, England there is found the birth of an Edmund Lewis, could this be him? A baptism record of John son of Edmund in 1630 in St. Matthew Parish could this be his son John? A baptism of John son of Edmund in 1630 in St. Mary Le Tower Church in Ispwich, Suffolk England could this be his son John? A baptism record of John son of Edmund in 1632 in Swaffham Prior, Cambridgeshire, England could this be his son John?
Additionally there were many Lewis's in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, England and Ipswich, Suffolk, England area.

There is a will of a Richard Lewes of Ipswich, merchant Oct 14, 1625 that leaves things to sons Thomas, Richard and Edmond Lewes and daughter Mary Lewes and Ann Basill.  Could this be our Edmond's father?

In the book Able men of Suffolk 1638 there is listed a Edmond Lewes, but again a few years after our Edmund Lewis arrived in the US.
Could any of these be him?
