JOHN, OF DOECHESTER .
John^ Holman, son of Morgan and Holman, of S-n'jTe, Dorsetshire,
England, was born , at Swyre, Dorsetshire, England, and died at Dorchester
in 1653. He married Anne , who was born , and died at
Dorchester, Dec. 1, 1639. He married, , who was bofn , and
died .
Mr. Holman was an active and enterprising citizen here very early, before
the arrival of the Dorchester people, and was in trade with the Indians, being
mentioned in Pyncheon's Papers, 1633, as collector of furs. Mr. Holman
built in Wilton probably in 1637. His house stood on the site now occupied
by the mansion of Mr. Payson. Mr. Holman was often selectman, and he
was Ensign of the first military company in Dorchester. He was one of the
first members of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company, and was
No. 19 on the list-roll. Abstract

An order in Court, Plymouth, Nov. 35, 1633, John Thorp, debtor, to John
Holman, of the Massachusetts Col. Ensign John Holman came in the ship
Mary and John. His residence was " By the Eock," meaning probably what
is now Dorchester Heights. Mr. Holman was appointed " Ensign " of the
First Military Company in Dorchester, Mass., under Capt. Israel Stoughton
and Lieut. Nathaniel Duncan, at the beginning of the Pequot War. His
estate inventoried at his death seven hundred and thirty-nine pounds and
sixteen shillings, which was a large fortune for those days, 1653.

First married, by 1637, Anne _____ , who died after bearing two children. He married 2nd, by 1641, Anne Bishop, whose parents never left Dorsetshire. He died in Dorchester MA between 10 June 1652 and 18 Mar 1652/3 .
