Captain Jeremy Clerke

He "CAPTAIN JEREMIAH CLARKE came to America from England before 1638, in which year he was admitted as an inhabitant of "Aquidneck," the Indian name of Portsmouth, Rhode Island. He married, in England, Frances, daughter of Lewis Latham and widow of William Dungan. They brought with them to America her children by her first marriage. She was born in 1611.
The Latham family of New England is descended from the old English line of which Frances, wife of Jeremiah Clarke, was a member. Her lineage appears under the title, "Latham Ancestry," herein.
On April 28, 1639, Jeremiah Clarke, with eight other men, signed a compact for the settlement of Newport, Rhode Island, at Portsmouth, when he is called "Elder." In the same year he was made Treasurer, and in 1639-1640, Constable. On March 10, 1640, he had a grant of one hundred and sixteen acres of land, and also in that year, with two others, was chosen to lay out the remainder of land at Newport, the new settlement. On March 16, 1641, he was made a freeman; in 1642, Lieutenant; and in 1644, Captain. He was Treasurer of Newport in 1644-1647, and in 1647-1649 was Treasurer of the four towns, the only ones then settled, of Rhode Island Colony. In 1648 he was made Assistant of the Colony, and "became President Regent, acting as Governor under this title, pending Governor William Coddington's clearance of certain accusations."
Captain Jeremiah Clarke died in January, 1652, and was buried at Newport. By January 18, 1656, his widow had married, as her third husband, Reverend William Vaughan. She died in September, 1677, in her sixty-seventh year, and was buried at Newport." He in Newport, RI in 1640.
